Matthew began working as an actor as a child with roles in theatre, TV and commercials. He trained at Bretton Hall, graduating with a First Class Degree in Theatre Arts: Acting in 1997.

Roles in London’s Off West End followed including Sexual Perversity in Chicago at the Canal Cafe Theatre and the first ever revival of Howard Brenton’s The Romans In Britain in 2000. He also toured the UK and France in The Shakespeare Revue

Following a break from acting whilst he pursued his career as a Director and Artistic Director of The Hope Theatre, Matthew returned to the boards in 2019 in The Invisible Man at The Jack Studio Theatre. In 2020 Matthew played Nana and Smee in Peter Pan at the Alban Arena. This production then transferred to the Roman Theatre Open Air Festival, St Albans in the summer of 2021 where Matthew reprised his double role. Matthew also appeared in The Comedy of Errors at the same festival, playing Egeon and Officer.

In 2022 Matthew played the lead role of Anthony in brand new comedy The Play With Speeches by James Woolf. Following a sold out run at the Hen & Chickens Theatre, Islington, this show transferred to The Jack Studio Theatre where Matthew received an OFFIE Nomination for Best Lead Performance In A Play. The same production then played for a further runs at both The Jack Studio and Upstairs At The Gatehouse in 2023 where Matthew reprised his award-nominated role.

Next was a festive run of Oh No It Isn’t! at the Jack Studio Theatre. For his dual role of Mr Chancery/Ugly Sister Matthew received his second OFFIE Nomination for Best Lead Performance In A Play. This production also received a Standing Ovation Nomination at the London Pub Theatre Awards 2024.

In the autumn of 2024 Matthew shot feature film Inside Dolly Lane for Decoupage Productions. Release date to be confirmed.
